Everyday Plates by David Herbstman

Submitted by: Jenny Hata Blumenfield of ATLA

When I met David, I was working for an artist who runs the ceramic line MQuan. They shared a studio in Brooklyn, and each day, as we had our morning tea and shared lunch together, we ate from David’s beautiful plates, bowls, and mugs.
His pieces are so satisfying to hold—especially when filled with food or drink—that they remind you how much joy good pottery can bring. So much of what’s out there is not that.

David studied ceramics in Japan, and the clay and glazes he uses are all of his own making. He is a true potter in every sense of the word— and that’s from a ceramic head like me.

When I moved to LA, I knew I wanted to fill my kitchen and home with his work. The inclusion of David’s pieces happened to coincide with Ryu moving in, marking the symbolic start of our home and life together.
